Brief Profile of the Department

The Department initially named as the “Unit of Animal Behaviour was started by the late Prof. M. K. Chandrashekaran, during the year 1975. It attained the status of the Department of Animal Behaviour & Physiology in 1980, Dr. R. Subbaraj joined as a Lecturer during that period and was promoted as a Reader in 1986. By the end of 1987 Dr. G. Marimuthu and Dr. Sripathi Kandula joined as Lecturers. After the retirement of Prof. Chandrashekaran (May 1996), Prof. R. Subbaraj became the Head; after his sudden demise, Prof. Marimuthu became the successor (Dec 2000) and served as the Head. Prof. Kandula moved over to the Dept of Immunology as its Head. Dr. R. Sankar, Dr. C. Amutha and Dr. K. Jayakumar joined the Department as Assistant Professors in March 2010. Dr. K. Jayakumar is the present Head of the Department.

Research Activities (2007-2017)


> ACSM3, an evident marker for early stages of HCC.

> 48 novel cell surface proteins was identified as potential markers for cervical cancer.

> Magnetite-CMCS-Digoxin and Magnetite-PVA-Digoxin were found to inhibit the growth of gastic cancer cell lines .

> Nimesulide, a known COX-2 inhibitor as an inhibitor of Wnt/β catenin signaling pathway.

> Celecoxib inhibits Wnt, Myc, E2F, RXR, STAT3, MAPK and Notch signaling pathways in gastric cancer cells.

> SHFM1 has been found capable of suppressing p53 mediated transcriptional activity & activating c-Src, MAPK/ERK and PI3K/Akt pathways.
