About Us

	SBS had a humble beginning in early 60’s as the PG extension centre of the Zoology Department of the Madras University at Madurai.
	Prof. S. Krishnaswamy (SK; former VC of MKU), a visionary for unifying various disciplines of Biological Sciences; In 1967, established the first integrated Department of Biology in the country.
	In 1977, the Department was elevated to School of Biological Sciences.

Vision

To improve scientific research capabilities towards achieving the status of Excellence in Basic Scientific Research.

Mission

To promote and disseminate advanced scientific knowledge to the young researchers and faculty members.

To promote collaborative research, access to advanced facilities and imparting training in frontier areas.

By providing advanced scientific skill/novel ideas and an access to advanced instruments which enable the researchers and faculty members to compete internationally.

Organizing summer/winter schools for young faculty members and research students to impart training in frontier areas of research.

Strengthening joint research projects and networking projects would enable our Universities/Institutes to reach the international status.

Supporting the researchers from other Universities/Institutes those who are deprived of equipment or laboratory facilities.

Guiding the research students of other Universities/Institutes on experimental trouble shooting and research methodology.

Providing “On Site” workshop to the researchers who are located in remote places and not able to participate in regular summer/winter school training.

Setting up of satellite research/training centre in remote places to provide training to the researchers and young faculty.
