                   Pudukkottai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, and Kanniyakumari.


                   Sources and Generation of Digital Data Base
                   a.     Administrative boundary maps for the ten southern districts of Tamilnadu have

                          been procured from Census of India, Chennai.

                   b.     The SOI toposheets of 1:50000 scale relevant to the ten southern districts viz.
                          Madurai,    Theni,   Dindigul,   Sivaganga,    Pudukkottai,   Ramanathapuram,

                          Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Thoothukkudi,  and Kanniyakumari have also been
                          purchased from SOI, Chennai.

                   c.     Satellite Data for the ten southern districts has been procured from National

                          Remote Sensing Centre, Hyderabad to prepare the land use database.
                   d.     Primary Census Abstract of population details and village level administration

                          data for the year 2001 has been collected from the Census of India.
                   e.     Geographic Background details have been drawn from National Information

                          Centre, Government of India.
                   f.     Geology and Soil data has been referred from the National Atlas Thematic

                          Mapping Organisation

                   g.     Metrological data from the Public Works Department and IMD, Chennai.


                   Software Used
                          Arc GIS 9.3, ERDAS IMAGINE 9.2, VB.Net 2006 and other supporting basic

                   Software’s that are helpful for the preparation of maps and compiling into the VB.Net

                   environment. The collected Toposheets related to the study area were scanned using A0
                   scanner at 300 DPI in order to convert it in to digital format and facilitate digitization.

                   The satellite data product was imported in GIS platform for digital image classification.
                   The following major themes pertaining to  the study area have  been appropriately

                   considered at various levels, study area as a whole, each one of the district with their

                   respective CD blocks. The theme maps thus created for the study area as well at various
                   levels are as follows:
