About Research
The Department Of Environmental Studies has been engaged in active research in the fields of air pollution, heavy metal pollution in water and sewage treatment. Under major funding from the Ministry of Environment, Government of India a 32 meter optical path multiple reflector has been designed and constructed and this has been coupled to a commercial FT-IR Michelson-100 spectrometer to continuously monitor SO2, NOR, CO and CO2 pollution in the atmosphere of Madura' City and neighborhood. As a part of Inter-Governmental panel on climate change (IPCC) sponsored by UNEP & WMO, vertical profiles of some green house gases like CO2, N20, CH4 and 03 are systematically monitored at Kodaikanal. Interdisciplinary research to study the ecology of Salem region of Eastern Ghats with reference to the impacts of mining is under progress.
