Population
Ten southern districts of Tamilnadu has the total population of 1.93 crores
according to 2011 census, out of these ten district Tirunelveli and Madurai has the
more population, while Theni has less population. The male female population Ratio
of all the district are similar except Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukkudi
Land use/Land cover
The major land use of the ten southern district of Tamil nadu is cropland
followed by fallow land. In the western part of study area particularly the eastern part
of the Western Ghats extends from Kanniyakumari to Dindigul. In the east bay of
Bengal coastal line extents from north to south. In the south the Indian ocean coastal
line extends upto Kerala coast. In general Built ups are seen near the river banks,
coastal region and the area where the transport facility are good.
Major Settlements and Transport Facility:
The major settlements notably among 278 Towns in these district are namely
Madurai, Theni, Cumbum, Dindigul, Kodaikkanal, Ramanathapuram, Rameswaram,
Karaikudi, Pudukkkottai, Sivakasi, Virudhunagar, Ambasamudram, Coutralam,
Tirunelveli, Alangulam, Thoothukkudi, Keezhapavur, Manimutharu, Mukkudal,
Nanguneri, Nagercoil and Kanniyakumari. The ten southern districts are well
connected with the National Highway 47, 7, 210, 49,208,7A, 220,210, and State
Highway numbering from 39,40,44,45,26,27,29,33,34,35,38,41. The Railway Line is
well connected with the adjacent cities and Districts. Ten districts has one
International airport in Madurai and one domestic Airport in Thoothukkudi, The Port
which is present in Thoothukkudi is natural deep sea harbour and this port also serves
for import and export, it also connects to the adjacent country like Srilanka. All the
major settlements of Ten southern district are well connected by means of existing
transport facility.
