Brief Profile of the Department

Department of Journalism and Science Communication:
The Department of Journalism and Science Communication was established in the year 1999. It is one of the Departments attached to the School of Linguistics and Communication.

M.A. Journalism and Mass Communication:
This Programme is designed to impart in-depth professional training in Print and Electronic Journalism, Page Layout and designing, Photo Journalism, Script writing for Radio and Television, Audio/Video Production, Technical Writing, Public Relations and Advertising Copy Writing. This programme offers a plethora of job opportunities in various media organizations. Students can pick and choose their field of career and specialize by acquiring the required skills during the course of study.
It also provides theoretical knowledge on Communication Theories, Development Communication, Science Communication, Media Management, Advertising and Public Relations and practical skills in various aspects of Journalism and Mass Communication with emphasis on producing socially responsible and culture conscious graduates.

Skill Development Initiatives:
The Department strongly believes in the fact that Journalism cannot be taught within the four walls of a classroom and carry out many activities aimed at developing the professional skills related media industry. The Department has made the production of a 8-page Bi-lingual Lab Journal – KAYAL (CLICK HERE) mandatory and added as a core course in to the curriculum as Lab Journal Production Hence the Department has started many Clubs like QUEST (Current Affairs Club) which conducts a weekly Quiz and Debate (CLICK HERE) on the topic of the week and the scores are added in to the students’ internal assessment of journalism related subjects, VELLITHIRAI (Film Screening Club) (CLICK HERE) which screens and review classic and best movies produced both in India and abroad, EYE OPENERS (Photography Club) which takes the students to Photo Walks and Field Trips (CLICK HERE) and make them learn the nuances of Photography.
Keeping in tune with the Media Industry needs, new subjects like New Media Production, Digital Magazine Production, Media Entrepreneurship have been newly added in to the curriculum of M.A.Journalism and Mass Communication which has being revised periodically. The Department also has launched a YouTube Channel named “JUNIOR JOURNOS” wherein the new media content produced by the students will be uploaded every Friday.

Media Internships:
Another unique feature of this programme is the variety of Media Internships which have been made mandatory for the Course Completion. Altogether, there are four internships, one in a newspaper concern; another in a Television Channel, yet another in an Advertising Agency; and the fourth in Public Relations Consultancy. These internships provide students the opportunity to understand the professional environment, acquire special skills, establish contacts, plan their career and find placements in the chosen fields.

Career Opportunities:
The programme opens up a variety of career opportunities namely Reporter/Sub-editor/Photo-journalist in Newspapers and Magazines, Copy-writer/Visualizer in Advertising Agencies, Public Relations Officer, Reporter/Sub-Editor/Visual Co-ordinator /Cameraperson/ Programme Executive in Radio and TV Channels, Anchor/Comperer besides being freelancer and media entrepreneurs.
