regression model and the distribution of the residuals it is very clear that the un-served
and under-served blocks have to be given first priority in planning the utility services,
so that the area can be developed optimistically.

The Thematic map layers from Digital Atlas such as Total Population,
Educational Facility and Reserve Forest are used for the analysis of educational
facility in Dindigul district. All these thematic layers are overlaid and the buffer layer
is created for the school location for 5km according to the NCERT norms with regard
to secondary school service. The buffer layer is created using the proximity option
under analysis tool of Arc GIS 9.3 software. The service /functional gaps in secondary
school service clearly exist in the northern parts of the district particularly in
Thoppampatti Block that includes Koothampatti, and Appayampatti villages. Even
though the population here is moderate with good transportation facilities the
secondary school service is not optimally extended to this area. But at the same time
in the case of Pantrimalai and Adalur Villages of Reddiyarchatram block due to its
hard terrain with less population, the secondary school service is limited. Similarly
Sirumalai village of Dindigul Block is also not served with secondary school, where
there is a problem for the children to travel a longer distance to avail Secondary
School facility. Mallapuram, Ulliyakottai, Pudukottai (R) of Guziliamparai Block and
Sirangattupatti, Lingavadi and Pudur villages of Natham Block have less transport
and secondary school facility and so a gap is seen.

The service area of fire station is analyzed for the Madurai Corporation area of
Madurai District. The layers used to analyze the service area are location of fire
Station, Transport Facility, Total Population and the data of the fire incidents. Using
the network analysis tool in Arc GIS the transport network and the service facility is
analyzed. The Anupanadi fire station, Tallakulam fire station, and Periyar fire station
service area is represented in different colours. The service area is delineated for all
the three station using the transport network and the travel time taken by the fire
vehicle to reach the destination.
