The Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Education was started in 1971. In 1996, it was renamed as Directorate of Distance Education.

Those who have discontinued their studies under Semester/Non-Semester may continue with exemptions for year and subjects.

Students who are diploma (3 year) holders through Polytechnics may also join directly in Second Year (LE)
Spot admission is available at the Office of the Directorate of Distance Education and all the 64 MKU Academic Centers in Tamil Nadu,132 MKU Academic Centers in Other States, 20 MKU Academic Training Centers in Other States and 17 MKU Academic Centers in Other Countries.
Admissions made twice a year – Academic and Calendar year streams
Face to face teaching for 56 hours / year/ student.
Besides printed course materials, contact classes at selected centers are arranged on Saturdays and Sundays.
Department of Adi Dravidian and Harijan Welfare, Tamil Nadu Government offers Scholarship to SC/ST students under regular scheme.
Tuition Fee exemption (100%) for Physically Challenged and half fee concession given for defence employee.
