charnockite, khondalite and unclassified gneisses. The Composite gneisses comprise

               biotite gneisses, hornblende biotite gneisses and garnet biotitic sillimanite gneisses.


               Climate and Soil

                       The average mean maximum and minimum temperature for the district is 31ºC
               and 24ºC respectively. During the months of October, November and December, the

               district receives a higher rainfall, which is more than  the annual average rainfall.
               Sandy coastal alluvium (27.37%) is the predominant soil type followed by red loam

               (20.96%). Black soil (13.49%) is the other type of soil prevalent in the district. About

               5% of the land available for cultivation suffers from degradation and 0.001% of the
               land is water logged and marshy.


               Population

                       According to 2011 census, Thoothukkuddi had a population of 17,38,376

               persons. Males constitute of 8, 58,919 persons in numbers and females constitute
               8,79,457 persons. Thoothukkudi has an average literacy rate of 86.5%, higher than the

               national average of 59.5% of which Male literacy is 91.4% and female literacy is

               81.8%


               Agriculture and other Landuse base

                       Cereals, pulses and oil seeds are the  three important crops grown in the
               district. The productivity pattern indicates that the productivity of pulses and oil seeds

               has fluctuated and of cereals has increased in the past five years. Thoothukkudi
               district has fallow land and cropland as predominant land use. As it is coastal district

               the land near the coastal region are wasteland, a narrow strip from north to south

               where in salt panes amids the wasteland are distributed almost closer to the shoreline.
               Except Thoothukkudi and its port builtup areas the area under other builtup are

               sparsely seen.


               Major Settlements and Service Facility

                       The major settlement of Thoothukkudi District are Thoothukkudi, Kayatharu,
               Kadamdur, Kovilpatti, V.Pudur, Vilathikulam, Athimaraipatti, Tiruchendur,

               Udangudi, Sathankulam, Arumuganeri, Alwarthirunagari, Srivaikundam, Eral, Athur.

               The major transport line passing through the district are National Highway 7 from
               Virudhunagr district to Tirunlveli District passes through this district and State
