The Educational Multimedia Research Centre, Madurai Kamaraj University was established as Audio Visual Research Centre (AVRC) by UGC in 1986. Based on the performance, the centre was upgraded as Educational Media Research Centre (EMRC) in 1991 and is under Non-Plan of the UGC..
The centre was re-designated as Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EM2RC) in 2005. It is one among the 21 media centres established all over India which produces high quality Educational Television programs. The main aim is to reach out the students at the National level with quality higher education through UGC Countrywide Classroom Programs.

The EMRC, Madurai has so far produced around 2156 ETV programs which are telecast over Doordarshan, Gyan Darshan and Vyas-the Higher Educational channel of UGC and hosted in CEC website. The programs produced by this centre have also won 2 National awards in various categories.

Apart from this EMRC, M.K.University has conducted 7 National level research studies including the National Live teleconferencing experiment and Live talkback experiment

To fulfill the National Mission on Education through ICT, the Ministry of HRD and CEC through its Media Centres are developing e-Content for undergraduate courses in all subjects for e-learning. Under this NME-ICT Project the EMRC, Madurai has been allotted the subject 'Sociology' in Phase-I. Production of e-contents and LORs for the subject Sociology was started in the year 2010.

For the Phase-II the subject allotted to EMRC, Madurai are B.A. (Hons) Music, B.Ed (Special Education for Visual Impaired), B.Sc. Agriculture.

The virtual classroom with EDUSAT facility of this centre is used to optimum by the student fraternity. This virtual classroom EDUSAT of EMRC, Madurai was considered No.2 among other Media Centres in 2006 by CEC/UGC and was sanctioned Rs.4/- lakhs as grant for additional infrastructure.
Many live interactive programs were conducted by this centre. On all live transmission days many students attended lectures and got benefited from the two way live audio and video interaction with eminent experts of National repute.
Objectives:
The primary objectives of this centre are:
- Production of Educational Television programs.
- Production of Syllabus based video lectures with multimedia inputs.
- Development of e-Content programs with multimedia inputs.
- Development of Learning Object Repository (LOR).
- Virtual Classroom operation through EDUSAT Network.
- Conduct Research to improve the quality of the programs.
- Organize training program for teachers in e-content development.

Courses conducted through EDUSAT :
e-Courses:
CEC and Media Centres started e-Courses through Virtual mode from 2006. So far 9 such courses were conducted. Online exams were conducted and certificates distributed to successful candidates.

- Advertisement & Marketing Salesmanship (2 courses)
MOOCs:
EMRC, Madurai launched two MOOCs Courses in Sociology through SWAYAM platform of MHRD during 2016.So far EMRC, Madurai has developed 45 MOOCs courses in various subjects for UG.
