Profile of the School
   School of Social Sciences consisting of Department of Sociology and Department of Political Science came into existence in1976 as two separate Departments which is later merged as a single School of Social Sciences housed in Dr. B.R Ambedkar Maligai has total faculty strength of ten and student strength of 60 and 50 doctoral students. School is actively engaged in teaching, research and extension activities.
   Department of sociology was established in the year 1976 with two Faculty members, Subsequently the Department has been strengthened and it has six faculty members. The Department has been specializing in the field of Social Change, Women Studies, Medical Sociology, Mass Communication, Rural Development, Political Sociology, Etc.,. The Department had contributed significantly to the fields of Social Change, Medical Sociology, Mass Communication. It has produced 45 Ph.Ds in various fields, more than 130 M.Phils and about 390 Post Graduates in Sociology. The Faculty members have published 30 books (National & International) around 625 research papers. The Department has a well-equipped air-conditioned library and has audiovisual equipments, computers etc. which are used for classroom teaching and research. The Department has carried out 25 research projects which are funded both by National and International Agencies.
   Based on the Significant Contribution made by the Department, the UGC has recognized the Department of Sociology as Department of Research Support under its Special Assistance Programme for a total budget of Rs. 32 lakhs for a period of 5 Years. The trust areas identified by UGC are Social Change, Mass Communication and Community Health. In 2007 UGC elevated the Department of Sociology under SAP-DRS II Phase with total outlay of Rs 40 lakhs and successfully completed the Second Phase vide under the thrust areas Social Change with special reference to Marginal Communities, Community Health and Mass Communication and Social Development.
   The Department of Sociology has been elevated by UGC for the SAP-DRS Phase-III programme with an outlay of Rupees 48 lakhs under the thurst areas Marginalised Group’s Community health and Mass Communication.
   The Department of Political Science was Started in the year 1976.The M.A. programme in Political Science was started in 1977 and the M.A programme in public Administration in 1990.It has produced 25 Ph.D.s and more than 150 M.Phils. The Department has specialized in the areas of Constitutional Studies, Panchayat Raj and Urban Local Governments, Police Administration, Behavioural Studies, Tribal Development Administration, Women Studies, Election Studies and International Studies. In 2013 the department of Political Science has successfully completed Nehru Study Centre sanctioned by UGC. Currently the department has one ongoing major project under UGC. The Department has also been actively involved in academic and research activities.
