Profile of the School
In the annals of Madurai Kamaraj University, the year 1970 is a land-mark for only during that year the Department of Ancient History and the Department of Modern History were created with professor N. Subramanian and Professor K. Rajayyan as Professors of the respective departments. From the same years courses were offered in M.A., M.Litt and Ph.D Six years later, the department namely the Department was enlarged with the creation of one more Department namely the Department of Medival History . In the same Year , the school system came into existence comprising of the Department of Ancient History, Department of Medival History and the Department of Modern History. Besides the M.A., M.Litt., and Ph.D programmes M.Phil Courses, Diploma in Archaeology and Diploma in Area Studies were offered. The school of Historical Studies presently offers M.A and M.Phil Courses in addition to the Ph.D. Programme, Besides traditional history papers the school offers specialized papers like Epigraphy, Archaeology, Art, Architecture, Archives keeping, American Studies and Contemporary History, Further, the School has initiated steps to institute two endowments.
