Profile of the School
The Department of Biotechnology was elevated to school of Biotechnology in 1984. The School offer three National level courses which are very competitive and rated high level. The Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, New Delhi has awarded A+ Grade for the M.Sc. Biotechnology teaching programme in MKU from among the DBT supported 32 universities in the country. There are strong research team in school and receives funding from the extra-mural research schemes and through the other major programme support of DBT, DST (FIST-II) and UGC (SAP; DRS Phase II). Major facilities have been established with the support of DBT, DST and UGC. The major research strength of the faculty is in deploying recombinant DNA methods for genetic Engineering of micro-organism and plants. The school has an excellent infrastructure to carry out challenging research in the emerging areas of genetic engineering, genomics,functional genomics,proteomics and structural genomics.
Alumni Contribution to School
The School of Biotechnology has produced many eminent Research Scientists who are currently occupied at higher cadre in many academic institutes/centers of the Government and non-Government organizations. Dr. S.K. Karuthapandian, Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology, Alagappa University, Karaikudi is currently an external Committee member of the Purchase Committee in the School. He also hosted many other committees of the School. The Alumni Ph.D. students currently working as Scientist in many institutes such as Dupont Pioneer, Hyderabad (Dr. Vai Ramanathan), Ixora Biosciences (Dr. K. Vijayachandra), ICGEB, New Delhi (Dr. Sam Arockiasamy), National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (Dr. K. Girish), Adventa (Dr. Nagarani Mahajan) and Professors in academic institutions and centers such as IISc, Bangalore (Dr. Kumaravel Somasundram), Kalasalingam University (Dr. K. Palanichelvam), THSTI, Haryana (Dr. A. Krishnamohan), NCBS, Bangalore (Dr. P. V. Shivaprasad), Central University, Kasargode (Dr. Jasmine D. Shah) have delivered special lectures in their area of expertise for the benefit of the M. Sc., M. Phil., and research students of the school.
