The Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics at School of Biotechnology, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, functions as a reputed centre for research and manpower development in Bioinformatics apart from providing service. The centre has been established as a Distributed Information Centre (DIC) in 1986. The National High Resolution Graphics Facility started by DBT as part of the Bioinformatics centre to cater the need of structural biologist and molecular modellers from 1993. Since 1996, the centre started its extensive manpower development activities with the initiation of the one year Advanced Diploma Course in Bioinformatics. The Centre was elevated to a Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics in 2003. In 2010, the M.Sc., Computational Biology was started as an upgradation of the Advanced Diploma Course and as a DBT network program with Anna University and Pondicherry University.
The Centre has been focusing its attention mainly on development of research and manpower as well as providing services in the areas of structural Bioinformatics, proteomics, database development, data mining and molecular modeling, dynamics and computer aided drug designing. The Centre has an acclaimed reputation for service, teaching and research in the area of Bioinformatics. A notable feature is that the centre is highly accessible to teachers and researchers in this region. The staff of the center, as an integrated activity, with the faculty of the School of Biotechnology performs the research and teaching. The Center has been a catalyst for the growth of Bioinformatics in this region and has contributed significantly to manpower development.
